Rocks For Heart
September 28th - October 2nd 2017
Coldwater & District Curling Club - Coldwater Ontario Canada
Rocks for Heart is a five-day curling event being held September 28th-October 2nd at the Coldwater & District Curling Club in Coldwater Ont. Our main focus of the event is to curl continuously for 105 hours to reclaim the Guinness World Record for the longest curling game by 10 curlers, while raising money for Radio For Cardiology: a fundraising initiative to bring the gold standard of cardiac care closer to home in the Simcoe County & Muskoka area.
This is the third world record attempt/fundraiser taken on by a Muskoka family, who see it as a way of growing this popular Canadian sport, as well as bringing funds and awareness to charities close to their hearts.
In 2011, a group of ten completed a 60-hour attempt held in Bala Ont. The Bala Curling Marathon set a world record as well as raised money for the Radio For Radiology campaign; an initiative to purchase a new Interventional Radiology machine at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Although the record did not meet Guinness World Records stringent criteria, it was recognized by the World Record Academy.
The record was then broken by teams in Scotland, then British Columbia and Scotland again, before four curlers from the first attempt set out to break the record again. In October 2014, the group of four plus six new curlers broke the world record in an event called Rocks Around The Clock, and held a 79 hour 15 minutes and 3 second attempt in Coldwater Ont. Rocks Around The Clock also raised funds for Radio for Radiation, an initiative to help purchase a CT Simulator suite for the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre at RVH. Rocks Around the Clock was deemed an official Guinness World Record in March 2015 and held the record for 14 months before being beat by a group in Switzerland at 100 hours 3 minutes and 25 seconds.
It took no time at all for organizers to get the ball rolling on Rocks For Heart. Six of the ten curlers from the Rocks Around The Clock event will return to try and set the new world record, along with four new curlers. The feat will not be easy as they are planning a 105-hour attempt this time around, but the team is ready and excited to set a new world record and raise funds and awareness for Radio For Cardiology.
During our five days, we will be hosting a curling marketplace meaning non curlers and curlers alike can try out some of the latest equipment in the industry, come out and compete in a pro shot competition to show off your curling skills, bid on raffle items and silent auction prizes donated by some incredible local talent and professional curlers across the world and support a great cause with Radio For Cardiology. We encourage everyone to come out, support the curlers on their journey, and donate to the cause. We will also be hosting a VIP fun spiel during the event with teams from local radio stations, TV stations and more will battle it out in two-six end games.
Among the ten curlers who are part of this event, are four original curlers who have participated in the last two world record attempts. Stephen Collins and Bill Pearce are the only two men in Canada to have held the world record twice for the longest curling game, and after completing the Rocks For Heart event, they will be the only two men in the world to have broken the record three times. Bill's twin daughters: Amanda and Brittany Pearce are currently the only two women in the world to have held the record twice, and will round that title up to three when they complete the next record in October. Two curlers from the Rocks Around The Clock event (Michael Foster and Lauren Grealy) will be returning to make it a second world record for each of them, and four new curlers will be joining this crew (Jeremy Rand, John Carpino, Terry Lee, and Calvin Manley) for a first time.
The hope is to raise as much money as possible for Radio For Cardiology through donations, silent auction items as well as raffles, while also setting a world record and promote and share our love for the game to as many people as we possibly can.
